Fall Activities in the Poconos

The crisp autumn air and its fall season are upon us! Home to endless adventures, the Pocono Mountains has plenty of fall happenings for you to enjoy. Whether on the ground or in the air, our fall activities offer an irreplaceable discovery of foliage and fun! Below are autumn experiences to catch before the leaves fall this season.


Mazezilla is an 11 acre corn maze with a new and unique design each year. We are proud to be able to offer this outstanding addition to our Pennsylvania farms complex. Since 1998, Mazezilla and Klingel Farm have welcomed thousands of visitors for wonderful, educational, and family-oriented adventures. The incredible Mazezilla maze is open in September and October of each year, dates and hours to be posted when available. We are a family farm in northeast Pennsylvania, working all year round to offer adventure at our maze, fun in our pumpkin patch, and delicious local food. The maze has expanded our ability to offer our farm-fresh produce to the public. Our marvelous Mazezilla maze and our premier pumpkin patch are delightful additions to our family farm, giving extra value to our business and to our customers. There’s so much to see and do at The Great Pocono Pumpkin Festival, open daily late September through October. Pick pumpkins, play games and enjoy some great food. Train Ride Take a scenic train ride through the region’s eclectic towns. Learn the history of the Pocono Mountains on an old-fashioned rail car while seeing the foliage. From couples to families, a train ride is an experience everyone can enjoy!  Hop aboard the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway for a 70-minute round trip from Jim Thorpe to the Lehigh Gorge State Park. Stop by the neighboring No. 9 Mine & Museum, and ride 1,600 feet into the mountain to discover an authentic coal mine! Biking Autumn leaves line over 260 miles of trails, setting the scene for biking. Two national and nine state parks, totaling over 100,000 acres, offer trails ranging in difficulty and distance. Scenic views also vary; however, vibrant fall colors are constant throughout the region. Bike rentals and shuttle services are available throughout the region, making biking a breeze. Rent a bike and pedal through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on the McDade Recreational Trail for a mountainous biking excursion.  Set out for a leisurely bike ride through the Lehigh Gorge on the Switchback Railroad Trail or The D&L Trail. Up the ante and experience The Bike Train; take a scenic train ride up the Lehigh Gorge for 25 miles, and then bike back down to Jim Thorpe at your own pace.

Fishing Go fish! Head out on Lake Wallenpaupack for a guided fishing trip. Ray’s Charter Guide Service runs outings on the Big Lake. Be sure to call ahead for fall hours of operation to schedule your appointment. Visit Big Brown Fish & Pay Lakes and fish two stocked ponds through the end of October. Hiking Another great way to experience the fall foliage is taking a hike. Pocono trails feature spectacular views while being close to the color. Over 260 miles of trails are spread across the region, so blazing a new trail might land you in a beautiful area.  Lacawac Sanctuary offers nine trails from easy to difficult throughout the 550-acre nature preserve. Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) features six trails exclusively on property open year-round from dawn until dusk. Nearby PEEC, visit Bushkill Falls to see waterfalls among the four hiking trails.

Eckley Miners' Village, Poconos

Eckley Miner's Village was a bustling center of activity from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s. The central part of the village consists of a museum, two churches, a sports club building, a company store, and several prominent houses. At the visitor's center, guests watch a video that explains the hardships of mining life as well as the history of the village.

The churches and social club give visitors a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the miners who lived in Eckley Village, along with their families. At the store, visitors learn about how company stores operated and why miners avoided them. Pocono Half Marathon & Fall Running Spectacular The "Niagara of Pennsylvania",  Bushkill Falls is among the Keystone state's most famous scenic attractions. This unique series of eight waterfalls, nestled deep in the wooded Pocono mountains, is accessible through an excellent network of hiking trails and bridges which afford fabulous views of the falls and the surrounding forest. Promised Land State Park is on the Pocono Plateau.

The park consist primarily of beech, oak, maple, and hemlock trees. Two lakes and several small streams add to the park’s outstanding scenic beauty. Fall is the best time to visit the Poconos. The one hour tour includes a movie in the Crystal Cave Theater, presenting the history of Pennsylvania's First Show Cave and geology of caves. Courteous guides will lead you 125 feet underground while dislaying and explaining all that nature has created.

Come face to face with your favorite horror movie villains in this outdoor walking trail. Realistic sets will have you thinking you just stepped inside your favorite horror movies. This year they have combined two attractions, Infection and Terror in the Corn, to bring you City of Horrors. A walking trail lasting 15-20 minutes (depends on speed of your group). D&L TRAIL CHALLENGEDaily

Anywhere! This is a virtual event to support the D&L Trail and programs. Complete your miles on the D&L Trail, other trails, in your neighborhood, or even on a treadmill or a stationary bike. This new event will challenge runners and walkers to complete at least four cumulative half-marathon (13.1-mile) distances. New this year, D&L also challenges cyclists to complete at least four full-marathon (26.2-mile) distances. Miles can be accrued over several workouts, on the 165-mile D&L Trail or somewhere else, any time between October 1 and November 1. You select where, when, and how, then register your miles easily on RunSignup’s website. Just as with the D&L Half Marathon, 100% of proceeds from the D&L Trail Challenge will support trail building and programming along the wonderful D&L Trail. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year. If you love the D&L Trail and the great outdoor areas of the region, join in this year’s event. Registration closes October 15.

OLD JAIL GHOST TOURS6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

On Saturdays October 10, 17 and 24, stroll the dark halls of the original 1871 Old Jail and HEAR haunting tales of true, ghostly happenings while you HUNT for spirits. Enjoy spine-chilling stories that really occurred in the Old Jail. This is not a made-up haunted house; the Old Jail is home to REAL spirits. Tours begin every 20 minutes. Children under 12 are not permitted. No advance tickets. Part of the proceeds from the October 24 tour will benefit the Jim Thorpe Police Department.

SPOOKY DAYS ON THE FARMFriday: 5-8pm; Saturday: 1-8pm

Enter Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm after dark, if you dare. Activities take a turn towards the things that go bump in the night on the farm around Halloween that will thrill and chill visitors of all ages. For those unshakable nerves, on Friday and Saturday nights from 5-8pm put your detective skills to the test by helping solve a murder mystery. A guide will help take you around the farm as you meet the suspects, gather clues, confront the Hag of the Woods, explore the creatures of the night, and more! The farm is extremely dark at night and visitors are encouraged to bring flashlights. Not suitable for all audiences. Play games, listen to stories, learn about the creatures of the season, take a horse and wagon ride, and much more! Get into the haunted Halloween spirit with something more unique then just another haunted house. This event takes place rain or shine and is both indoors and outdoors, so please prepare for the weather.

Outdoor Getaways

For a lot of people, there's nothing more invigorating or relaxing than hitting the hiking trails and enjoying nature. Pennsylvania is home to some of the finest hiking trails anywhere! The Allegheny National Forest is a wonderful place to find scenic trails and view the fall foliage up close. You can choose the Kinzua Valley Trail, which for a pleasant seven-mile hike with great views of the trees. For the more adventurous (and fit!) there's the North Country National Scenic Trail—an epic 96.3-mile backpacking experience! This trail is well marked with signage and provides a tremendous way to immerse yourself in the colorful forest. If you're looking for something a little less strenuous, you may want to consider driving along the National Longhouse Scenic Byway: a 27-mile loop that traverses the forest and offers excellent overlooks with plenty of foliage. American Candle

American Candle opened its doors on April 13, 1978. Now a Pocono Mountains staple, the establishment continues to harness true Poconos spirit. Enchanting is the only word that can possibly sum up everything American Candle has to offer. When you walk into the huge establishment, you are immediately met with the aroma of candles, soothing music, and beautiful displays that let you know you are not in your average candle shop.
