Winter Activities in the Poconos

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

Dog Sledding

Not many people can say they’ve been dog sledding! This sport is most popular in Alaska, but thanks to our ideal winter conditions, Arctic Paws Dog Sled Tours can bring this experience to the Pocono Mountains region! You can plan a day dog sledding in the Poconos by requesting a tour on the weekend of your visit from mid-December to late-February.

Poconos Sleigh Rides

A Pocono Mountains horse drawn sleigh ride is one of winter's favorite pastimes. Take a ride through a winter wonderland of snow with Daisy Field Farm in the Poconos. Wrap up in a warm blanket next to your loved ones, inhale the fresh, pine-scented air, sit back and experience the spectacular scenery as you glide through the snow on a horse-drawn sleigh with the sounds of jingle bells in the air.

Sledding

Hickory Run State Park, between White Haven and Albrightsville along Route 534, has a small day use area near the swimming beach that’s been used for sledding. Skywood Park: a 55-acre open space parcel, on Route 191 between the junction of 940 and 390 in Paradise Township. Sledding is permitted from dawn to dusk. It consists of an open field with a sledding hill, with hay at the bottom. The long, steep hill along Wallace Street, just north of the Stroudsburg Wesleyan Church at 915 N. Fifth St. in Stroud Township. Sledding is permitted dawn to dusk, Monday through Saturday, and noon to dusk on Sundays.

Horseback Riding in Poconos

Feel the winter air on your face and enjoy the natural scenery of the Pocono Mountains as you ride horseback in our beautiful region. Come out and enjoy the winter scenery from a different angle. Take to the trails at Daisy Field Farm or Mountain Creek Riding Stable for a winter adventure. Pick the best horse for you or just enjoy a relaxing ride at Deer Path Riding Stable or Bushkill Riding Stables. Get out and enjoy the Poconos on a snow-covered trail.

Snowmobiling Adventures

If you really want to get your heart racing, you must go snowmobiling at Hickory Run State Park. You can tread through miles and miles of winding, snow-covered trails. Promised Land State Park is another great destination for snowmobiling. You’ll find over 20 miles of impeccably groomed trails and endless amount of fun!

Ice Skating

The Poconos in the winter poses freezing temperatures and snow, which are the perfect conditions for popular winter activities like ice skating! There are a variety of places to go ice skating in the Poconos. From indoor ice rinks to frozen-over lakes, you can choose your own ice skating adventure in the Poconos. For experienced ice skaters, we recommend skating Sand Spring Lake at Hickory Run State Park. However, before you lace up those skates and do your best Brian Boitano or Tara Lipinski (a Pennsylvania native), make sure the ice is safe before venturing out. Ask locals and look for signposts. Strap on a pair of blades and glide across the ice at Skytop Lodge. Please keep in mind that the ice thickness is not monitored, so be sure to check the winter weather report before your visit!

Snow Tubing

Snow tubing in the Poconos is a great family-friendly activity that’s thrilling for visitors of all ages. We recommend Jack Frost and Big Boulder Ski Resort. These ski areas offer two-hour tubing adventures for $25 per rider. Or, visit Camelback Snowtubing for an after-dark snow tubing adventure!

Skiing and Snowboarding

The skiing thrill of your life awaits you in the Poconos. Fast lifts, powder-fresh snow, and pristine trails make it the ideal destination for any skiing or snowboarding excursion. There are too many Poconos ski resorts to count, but a few of our favorites are Shawnee Mountain, Camelback Mountain, Jack Frost and Big Boulder Ski Resort and Blue Mountain. Whether you would like to take it slow on the bunny hill or brave the double black diamond, there is something for everyone! It’s by far one of the best things to do in the Poconos in winter.

Cross-Country Skiing Poconos

Throughout the Pocono Mountains there is a variety of places to savor the snow hushed serenity and exhilaration of cross-country skiing. Trails are plentiful in our state parks and national recreation areas as well as on the beautiful properties of some of our lodging facilities. Whether you are a beginner or expert, there is no better way to discover the majesty of a snow-blanketed forest, the wonder of a bright-white expanse of meadow and the awesome beauty of the rushing waters than from the various trails in the Pocono Mountains while cross country skiing.
